Wal-Mart Money Card - Revealed How It Really Works

By Jacobey Larstons on November 16, 2011

The Wal-Mart Money Card is a prepaid Visa that is issued and operated by GE Money Bank. In order to use it you must first deposit money, which can be done in a number of ways. A primary method is by visiting your local Wal-Mart store, and handing your cash to the cashier, who will load the desired amount on. Any amount between $20 and $1, 100 can be added, and will be credited instantly. A $3 fee applies when doing this.

You can also cash a check with the cashier, loading all or part of the check onto your card. Bear in mind that check cashing fees may apply when doing this, and this option is not available in certain states, such as New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

A third popular method of reloading is by purchasing a Green Dot Money Pak. These come in amounts from $20 to $1, 100, and can be added onto your card by either going online and following the instructions, or by phoning a designated help line. Direct deposit is the fourth and final method and is completely free.

This will be accepted anywhere that accepts Visa debit. This means you can use it at restaurants, in shops and for paying your bills. You are also able to use it to shop over the internet and over the phone.

There are several additional benefits also. The Visa Zero Liability Policy means it is safer than carrying cash, as you are protected if your card is lost or stolen, and you are also able to access and maintain your account online.

There are downsides as well. Other than the fees that have already been mentioned, there are a number of charges that potential customers should be aware of, including a $1 fee for an ATM balance inquiry, and a $3 one-time issuance fee. It can be used to withdraw cash at any ATM that carries the Visa logo, but you will be charged an ATM fee for doing this.

It will not allow you to build your rating, as you are not being extended any line of credit, and no reports are made to the major bureaus. There is no credit check required in order to be approved, but federal law requires that you can verify your identification, social security number and address. Make sure you check out the full terms and conditions before applying for this offer.
