Sharks Found In The Little Pigeon River

By Scott Tidwell on May 25, 2011

By Scott Tidwell

Cute pink and red rubber sharks, that is! On July 30, 2011, the Little Pigeon River will be flooded with these anything-but-terrifying creatures during the Gatlinburg United Way Shark Race. Every shark in the pod will show off their slickest moves as they "swim" downriver to a finish line that promises prizes for five lucky participants.

Why would otherwise sound-minded people dump rubber sharks into the river? For charity, of course! Each year, the United Way of Sevier County holds a fundraiser that creates shark-infested waters on the Little Pigeon River. For a mere $10, you can purchase a ticket with a number that corresponds with a rubber shark.

The release takes place at the Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies and it's truly a sight to behold. Thousands of rubber sharks bob and float to the sounds of bluegrass music and the giggles of children and adults alike. There could be up to 15, 000 of these critters in the river at one time, depending on the number of tickets sold. The fee paid for the thrill of owning a shark for just a little while goes to support the United Way of Sevier County and has proven to be a major annual fundraising event due to its popularity.

Each ticket comes with a chance to win some great prizes, and we aren't talking fish food here. The grand prize is sure to elicit some good old-fashioned mountain-style yee-hawing, as $10, 000 cash is handed out. The second prize for the eighth annual running of the sharks is a seven-day, six-night Smoky Mountain vacation package. Nice! Plus, there are also generous prizes awarded for third through fifth places such as a $350 Walmart Gift Card and VIP amusement park packages.

Even if your shark doesn't win, place or show, your energy and donation will make quite an impact. The United Way of Sevier County supports over 20 local charities that provide services to the neediest friends and families. The affordable entry price means that most people can support this worthy organization without putting a dent in their household budget.

Tickets can be purchased online at the United Way of Sevier County website or by calling (865) 453-4261. You can also buy tickets at a number of local businesses and organizations, including Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies, the Gatlinburg Chamber of Commerce and the Gatlinburg Welcome Center.

You don't have to be present to win. Not being able to attend the event should not stop you from supporting this worthy cause. Just hang on to your ticket and winners will be notified shortly after the sharks end their run. All entrants must be 18 or older.

We do encourage you to come. The annual Shark Race is filled with family, food, folk music and fun. This outdoor event proves itself to be a favorite year after year.

Can you feel the anticipation? Fins are bobbing, the current is rushing, and the crowds are going wild. Make plans now to pull up a riverbank and get in on all the excitement!
