Registering a prepaid Visa gift card to your name and address is necessary for making certain purchases where the merchant might use your ZIP Code as a component of authorization, such as for online orders or at gasoline stations. Most gift card providers allow users to register the cards on their website or via telephone. These details are most often available on any documentation that accompany the card, or on the back of the card itself.

Instructions

Locating and Using the Issuer's Contact Information

  • 1. Read any "terms and conditions" paperwork that came with the card. These instructions might detail how to activate the card, if necessary, as well as how to register the card to a physical address.

  • 2. Locate the website address, if any, on the back of the card. Many gift card providers offer registration services online. If the provider does not offer a website, try calling the telephone number on the back of the card.

  • 3. Access the website of the card issuer and fill out the form with all requested contact information. Some providers might request a street address rather than a P.O. Box. Usually, the option to enter your phone number and e-mail address also is provided.

  • 4. Keep the gift card with you as the website or automated telephone system will ask for the card number as well as the security code found on the back of the card. The security code is usually three or four digits and appears in the signature panel.

Tips & Warnings

  • If physically "swiping" the card at a point of sale, run the card as "Credit" instead of "Debit" to prevent the card from being declined, since the "Debit" option expects the use of a PIN. Prepaid debit cards typically do not have PINs associated with them.

  • Visa cautions that you should use the same contact information when ordering online that you used to activate the card (see Reference 1). This ensures the card will not be declined. Wells Fargo also points out that registering this type of card assists in situations where the card is lost or stolen (see Reference 2).
