What Is a Rush Card? By Taunda Edwards, eHow Contributor

The RushCard is a prepaid card by Visa that lets cardholders use a credit card without falling into credit card debt. Prepaid cards allow a person to spend only the amount she deposits into her card account. The RushCard is available to all people over age 18. It offers all of the luxuries of a credit or debit card--making purchases at retail outlets, via the Internet, and withdrawing money from an ATM.

  1. How To Apply

    • Application for the RushCard is done online (see References below). You must fill in all of the required information accurately. Once you have done so, submit your application and the card will arrive in 7 to 10 days.

    Account Limits

    • Once you activate your account, you must load money onto your RushCard to begin using it. You're able to load up to $1, 000 each calendar day through PayPal, MoneyGram or a mailed-in check or money order. If you use the direct deposit method, you may upload a maximum of $5, 000 per calendar day.

Where Can You Use A RushCard?

    • The RushCard can be used at any merchant or location that accepts the Visa logo. However, the RushCard is a prepaid card, and some merchants set stipulations on prepaid card usage. For example, you may not use a prepaid card when renting a car through various rental car agencies. You need a major credit card to do so, not a prepaid card. Also, when you purchase gas paying at the pump, you may not be able to use the RushCard. Some gas stations require a $75 hold when paying with a prepaid credit card, and if you don't have this amount available, the card will be rejected.

    Direct Deposit

    • Some people who apply for a RushCard have been denied for a secured or unsecured major credit card, as well as a bank account. Those who don't have bank accounts have issues when it comes to cashing their payroll check. Fees that check-cashing facilities charge for cashing your check are high, and most people don't like the hassle of paying them. With the RushCard, you can avoid those high fees by having your payroll check direct-deposited to your Rush account for free. All you need to do is fill out the direct deposit form, and you have the benefit of having your check available every payday in your Rush account.

    Benefits

    • A RushCard helps those who eventually want to be approved for a major credit card by building their credit. Another benefit with the RushCard is the ability to receive text messages on your cellular phone, showing your account balance and other special news. RushCard offers Rush Bill Pay, which allows a person to set up automatic bill payments through her RushCard. You must have the money in your Rush account to pay the bill. In the event that you don't, you may change the date or stop payment with Rush Bill Pay.
