Prepaid cards solve many financial problems. A prepaid credit-style card gives parents the ability to provide an limited but flexible allowance for teens. They can take away the hassle of bringing along a lot of cash or credit cards on vacation. They limit your risk of monetary loss compared to carrying your debit card with you. However, due to their being neither credit nor true debit cards, prepaid cards inevitably need refilling.

Instructions

  • 1. Look for payment and refill information. This may be located on the card or, if you're refilling a prepaid phone, in the phone's information. You should be able to find either a toll-free phone number to call to obtain account information and balances, if not the account info and balances themselves.

  • 2. Call the toll-free number to obtain the account and balance information. Alternately, go to the card provider's website. Often, a card provider will permit and even encourage refills online.

  • 3. Decide how much money or time you would like to have on your card. Limit the amount to what you really need in order to prevent significant financial loss should your card or phone get lost. Look at any fees charged for refilling to decide if you really want to refill or should look into using a different card.

  • 4. Refill your card, following the steps outlined by the card provider. Usually, you will need to use your debit or credit card to do this, though some companies may permit you to give your bank-account information instead.
