How Does a Gasoline Credit Card Work? By Bennett Gavrish, eHow Contributor

  1. Application

    • In order to be approved for a gasoline credit card, you must be at least 18 years of age and valid Social Security number. Then you can start applying for a card, which is usually done on the internet. Gasoline credit cards are typically connected to a specific chain of gas stations but run by one of the major credit card companies. The card company will review your application and make a credit decision on your account. If approved, the company will send you a gasoline credit card in the mail, at which time you can activate and begin using it.

    Paying with the Card

    • People with gasoline credit cards usually use them almost exclusively at gas stations in order to accrue the biggest rebate. The cards, however, can be used anywhere that the associated credit card company is accepted. For example, if your gas card is connected to MasterCard, then the card can be used at any store that accepts MasterCard. Gas cards work like regular credit cards and require a valid signature for all purchases.

    Card Rebates

    • Each gasoline credit card offers a different set of rewards and rebates for using it, but most involve some sort of saving on current or future gas purchases. Some of the most popular gas cards offer a rebate of up to five percent on all purchases made at gas stations or convenience stores. Some gas card companies will automatically credit customer accounts with earned rebates, but others require that the customer requests a transfer of rebate funds.
